Laced high-waist sheer nylon stockings featuring fragments of 草书 (cursive script) from the Thousand Character Classic (《千字文》) — a foundational Chinese text once used to teach literacy, brush technique, and Confucian ideals to children.
The calligraphy is a digitised excerpt of my own brushwork on traditional 宣纸 (xuan paper), practised during lockdown back in 2020. A quiet, repetitive act of training that felt like temporal dislocation. A kind of time travel by ink and gesture, now reborn in nylon and stretch.
The text starts with:
“天地玄黄，宇宙洪荒。 日月盈昃，辰宿列张。 寒来暑往，秋收冬藏。 闰余成岁，律吕调阳。 云腾致雨，露结为霜……”
"Heaven and Earth are mysterious and dark; the universe vast and primordial.
The sun rises and sets; constellations stretch across the sky.
Cold comes, heat goes; autumn harvest, winter stores.
Intercalary months complete the year; pitch-pipes harmonize the solar tone.
Clouds rise and bring rain; dew condenses to frost…”
